INTRODUCING THE INAUGURAL EMERGING YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDEE, Antonio Travis

In 2016, FFLIC launched the Black Man Rising (BMR) movement to build youth voice and power to improve the outcomes of boys and young men of color (BYMOC) in New Orleans.  Antonio Travis is one of the founders of BMR and serves as FFLIC’s Program Director who is responsible for the oversight of BMR.  Since 2016, Antonio has been committed to supporting FFLIC’s crucial and necessary grassroots work to empower and uplift youth plagued by high incarceration and suspension rates.  As FFLIC's youth representative for the National Dignity in Schools Campaign and the National Youth Alliance for Boys and Men of Color (NYABMOC), Antonio has traveled across the country attending convenings and speaking on panels about his experience with school pushout and zero tolerance policies working to create leadership opportunities for BYMOC and to ensure the voices of young people of color are included in the development of policies and practices that directly affect their lives.  As young men who were directly impacted by the New Orleans failed charter school experiment, BMR strives to be what they lacked as they began their transition into adulthood. As a core member of BMR, Antonio has worked with his other core members to develop a mentorship program that seeks to put youth on the first steps of their success.  In 2017, BMR successfully completed the development of their mentorship program which uses the BMR Model: “Authentic Engagement, Current Events, and Consistency” to ensure the best experience for our youth. The time spent with a BMR mentor reflects a process of empowerment and strengthening as a man of color in this world.  Since the launch of BMR they have increased their membership from the 6 core (founding) members to 30 members and from May 26, 2018 through June 8, 2018, BMR graduated 8 of their mentees presenting them with a program completion certificate and their BMR member shirts.  The next step for the graduated members is to develop the next program for the upcoming "Da’Village" program and to become peer leaders for the next group of BMR mentees.  We are so proud of the work and dedication Antonio has exemplied to improve the lives of BYMOC and we are excited to be able to present our Inaugural Emerging Youth Leadership Award to Antonio on September 14, 2018 at FFLIC's 3rd Annual Gala.  FFLIC's Gala will be held at Rosy's Jazz Hall located at 500 Valance Street, New Orleans, LA from 6pm - 9pm.  Early bird tickets on sale NOW! or make a donation in lieu of attending to help bring our members from across the state!  Hope to see you there!
